Product Introduction

TA10 is the Chinese designation for a low-alloy titanium grade corresponding to Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni under international standards such as ASTM Grade 12. It contains small additions of molybdenum (0.2 to 0.4 percent) and nickel (0.6 to 0.9 percent). These alloying elements significantly improve the alloy’s corrosion resistance in reducing acids, hot brines, and high-temperature chloride environments, while maintaining good formability and weldability.

The nominal chemical composition of TA10 is: molybdenum 0.2 to 0.4 percent, nickel 0.6 to 0.9 percent, iron up to 0.30 percent, oxygen up to 0.25 percent, carbon up to 0.08 percent, nitrogen up to 0.03 percent, hydrogen up to 0.015 percent, and the balance titanium.

Key mechanical properties (typical for annealed condition):

- Tensile strength: 480 to 620 MPa

- Yield strength (0.2% offset): 345 to 480 MPa

- Elongation: 18 to 22 percent

- Density: 4.51 g/cm³

- Modulus of elasticity: 105 GPa

TA10 offers excellent corrosion resistance in:

- Reducing acids: dilute sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), hydrochloric acid (HCl), and organic acids (formic, oxalic, acetic).

- Hot chloride solutions and high-temperature brine (resistant to crevice corrosion and pitting).

- Alkaline environments and oxidizing acids (nitric acid) at moderate temperatures.

Compared to pure titanium (TA2, Grade 2), TA10 provides superior resistance in reducing acid media where pure titanium suffers from corrosion. Compared to palladium-stabilized grades (TA9, Grade 7), TA10 offers similar or better performance in some reducing environments at a lower cost because molybdenum and nickel are less expensive than palladium.

TA10 retains good weldability using GTAW, plasma, and electron beam methods. It has moderate formability; cold bending and drawing are possible but require more force than pure titanium. It is not heat treatable and is used in the annealed condition.

Common international equivalents:

- ASTM B265 Grade 12 (USA) – Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni

- JIS H4600 TP340C with Mo-Ni addition (Japan)

- BS 2TA 11 (UK)

Typical applications of TA10 include:

- Chemical processing: heat exchangers, evaporators, reactor vessels, and piping for handling dilute sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and wet chlorine gas.

- Marine engineering: seawater cooling systems, brine heaters, and desalination plant components where crevice corrosion is a concern.

- Oil and gas: downhole tubing and flowlines in sour (H₂S) and CO₂ environments.

- Hydrometallurgy: autoclaves and leach tanks for nickel/cobalt extraction.

Comparison with other titanium grades:

- TA2 (Grade 2, pure Ti): TA10 has much better resistance to reducing acids but is slightly stronger and less formable.

- TA9 (Grade 7, Ti-0.2Pd): TA10 offers comparable corrosion resistance in many reducing acids at lower cost; TA9 is superior in very dilute, hot reducing acids.

- TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V): TA10 has lower strength but much better corrosion resistance and weldability.

Selection guidance: Choose TA10 for cost-effective corrosion protection in reducing acid environments, hot brines, and crevice-prone chloride service, especially when palladium-stabilized grades are too expensive. For pure titanium’s standard oxidizing or seawater service, TA2 remains sufficient. For maximum corrosion resistance in the most aggressive reducing acids, TA9 (Grade 7) or TA9-1 (Grade 11) may still be preferred.

Application Industry

● Titanium: Widely used in aerospace, marine engineering, and chemical equipment. It offers excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and lightweight performance, ideal for seawater systems, medical implants, and pressure vessels.

Monel: Mainly applied in marine, oil and gas, and seawater treatment systems. With outstanding resistance to seawater corrosion and oxidation, it is suitable for pumps, valves, propellers, and heat exchangers.

● Inconel: Used in high-temperature environments such as aerospace engines, gas turbines, and industrial furnaces. It maintains strength and oxidation resistance at extreme heat, perfect for turbine blades and boiler components.

Incoloy: Applied in petrochemical plants, heat treatment furnaces, and acid processing equipment. It resists high-temperature oxidation and corrosive media, widely used in pipes, heaters, and reactor parts.

Hastelloy: Serves in severe corrosive environments including chemical processing, flue gas desulfurization, and acid production. It withstands strong acids, chlorine, and harsh chemicals for reactors and pipelines.

Nickel: Used in electronics, electroplating, batteries, and corrosion-resistant parts. As a base metal for alloys, it provides good ductility and conductivity for industrial and electrical applications.
