Product Introduction
Monel K-500 is a nickel-copper alloy (approximately 65 percent nickel, 30 percent copper) with the addition of aluminum (2.3 to 3.3 percent) and titanium (0.35 to 0.85 percent). These elements allow precipitation hardening, giving Monel K-500 significantly higher strength and hardness than Monel 400 while retaining excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in marine and chemical environments.
The nominal chemical composition is: nickel (plus cobalt) 63.0 to 70.0 percent, copper 27.0 to 33.0 percent, aluminum 2.3 to 3.3 percent, titanium 0.35 to 0.85 percent, iron up to 2.0 percent, manganese up to 1.5 percent, and silicon up to 0.5 percent. The precipitation hardening process involves solution annealing followed by aging at about 480 to 590°C, which forms fine Ni3(Al,Ti) precipitates.
Key mechanical properties (typical, aged condition):
● Tensile strength: 900 to 1,100 MPa (compared to 480–550 MPa for Monel 400)
● Yield strength (0.2% offset): 620 to 860 MPa (compared to 170–240 MPa for Monel 400)
● Elongation: 15 to 25 percent (lower than Monel 400)
● Hardness: 25 to 35 HRC (approximately 250–350 HB)
● Density: 8.44 g/cm³ (slightly lower than Monel 400’s 8.80 g/cm³)
Corrosion resistance: Monel K-500 is virtually identical to Monel 400 in most environments. It offers excellent resistance to seawater, brine, reducing acids (hydrofluoric, dilute sulfuric), alkalis, and salt spray. It also resists stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen embrittlement in most conditions. However, its higher strength makes it more susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement in certain severe sour gas (H2S) environments, where careful specification is required.
Standards: ASTM B865 (rod, bar, plate, sheet, and strip), ASME SB865, QQ-N-286, AMS 4676 (bar and forgings), and BS 3076 NA18.
Typical applications of Monel K-500 include:
● Pump shafts, valve stems, and impellers in marine and chemical service.
● Fasteners (bolts, nuts, studs) requiring high strength and corrosion resistance.
● Oil and gas industry components: downhole tool parts, blowout preventer (BOP) components, and springs.
● Propeller shafts and rudder shafts for marine vessels.
● Instrumentation components in corrosive environments where both high strength and resistance to seawater are needed.
Comparison with Monel 400: Monel K-500 has roughly double the yield strength and significantly higher hardness, making it suitable for wear and high-stress applications. However, it is more expensive, has lower ductility, and requires precise heat treatment. Monel K-500 also has slightly lower corrosion resistance in some reducing acids due to its higher aluminum content. For welded components, Monel 400 is preferred because Monel K-500 is prone to cracking in the heat-affected zone; welding should be done in the solution-annealed condition followed by full heat treatment.
Selection guidance: Choose Monel K-500 when high strength (comparable to stainless steel) and excellent marine corrosion resistance are required. For applications that do not demand high strength, Monel 400 is more economical and easier to fabricate. For extreme sour gas environments, consider nickel alloys such as Alloy 625 or C-276 instead. Monel K-500 is the standard choice for high-strength, corrosion-resistant shafts and fasteners in seawater service.
Product Type
Application Industry
● Titanium: Widely used in aerospace, marine engineering, and chemical equipment. It offers excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and lightweight performance, ideal for seawater systems, medical implants, and pressure vessels.
● Monel: Mainly applied in marine, oil and gas, and seawater treatment systems. With outstanding resistance to seawater corrosion and oxidation, it is suitable for pumps, valves, propellers, and heat exchangers.
● Inconel: Used in high-temperature environments such as aerospace engines, gas turbines, and industrial furnaces. It maintains strength and oxidation resistance at extreme heat, perfect for turbine blades and boiler components.
● Incoloy: Applied in petrochemical plants, heat treatment furnaces, and acid processing equipment. It resists high-temperature oxidation and corrosive media, widely used in pipes, heaters, and reactor parts.
● Hastelloy: Serves in severe corrosive environments including chemical processing, flue gas desulfurization, and acid production. It withstands strong acids, chlorine, and harsh chemicals for reactors and pipelines.
● Nickel: Used in electronics, electroplating, batteries, and corrosion-resistant parts. As a base metal for alloys, it provides good ductility and conductivity for industrial and electrical applications.
