Product Introduction

1045, 1065, 1070, and 1080 are medium to high carbon steel grades used as the base material for galvanized steel wire. The numbers indicate nominal carbon content: 1045 has approximately 0.45 percent carbon, 1065 has 0.65 percent, 1070 has 0.70 percent, and 1080 has 0.80 percent. These grades offer significantly higher tensile strength, hardness, and wear resistance compared to low carbon wires (such as SAE1006-1010), but with reduced ductility and elongation.

The wire is produced by drawing high carbon steel rod to the desired diameter, often with patenting and heat treatment to achieve specific mechanical properties, followed by galvanizing. The zinc coating is typically applied by hot-dip galvanizing (immersion in molten zinc at about 450°C) to provide corrosion protection, especially for demanding outdoor or high-stress applications. Electro-galvanizing is less common for these grades because the thin coating does not match the long service life expected from high carbon wire.

Key properties vary with carbon content:

● Tensile strength: 1045 wire typically ranges from 550 to 800 MPa; 1065 from 800 to 1,200 MPa; 1070 from 1,000 to 1,400 MPa; 1080 from 1,200 to 1,870 MPa (or higher for music wire grades).

● Elongation: Low, generally 2 to 8 percent, decreasing as carbon content increases.

● Hardness: Increases with carbon content; 1080 wire is much harder and more wear-resistant than 1045.

● The hot-dip galvanized coating thickness is typically 45 to 200 micrometres, providing 15 to 25 years of corrosion protection in outdoor environments.

Common diameters range from 0.5 mm to 6.0 mm, with smaller diameters used for spring wire and larger diameters for structural applications.

Typical applications:

● 1045 galvanized wire: General purpose high strength wire, baling wire for heavy bales, tie wire for construction where higher strength is needed, wire mesh for industrial use.

● 1065 galvanized wire: Spring wire for coil springs, suspension springs, and clip springs; wire rope strands; pre-stressed concrete wire; agricultural fencing requiring high tension.

● 1070 galvanized wire: Heavy duty springs, cable armouring, overhead ground wire (OPGW), barbed wire and concertina wire (for security fencing), and wire for brushes.

● 1080 galvanized wire: Music wire and high performance spring wire (often oil-tempered), wire for prestressed concrete beams and railway ties, heavy duty cable strands, and any application requiring maximum tensile strength and fatigue resistance.

Selection guidance: For general high strength galvanized wire, 1045 or 1065 is sufficient. For demanding spring applications or extreme tensile loads, 1070 or 1080 is required. Hot-dip galvanizing is essential for outdoor use; for indoor or dry environments where only moderate corrosion protection is needed, electro-galvanized or black (ungalvanized) high carbon wire may be used. These high carbon wires are not suitable for hand-tying or bending because they are stiff and prone to cracking under sharp bends. If ductility is required, choose low carbon galvanized wire (SAE1006-1010).
